Mountain Gravel is a loose product created from a flushed, properly selected mixture of various gravels, fine sands and quartz and whole mountain boulders matched to the modeling scale of 1:35 – 1:24. An electrifying effect is provided by a wonderful dark color, perfectly reproducing mountain trails and roads. If needed, the option to paint after drying and tint with pigments allows you to adapt its color to a variety of theater of action.

Modellers World Mountain Gravel: Create roads, landscapes, with unparalleled scale realism.

Modeling Gravel can be applied in different ways, depending on the one chosen we can achieve different effects. To fix it, we can use “Solution for Sands and Pigments” or “Pigment Fixer”, which will also affect the effects obtained. It can also be pressed onto Modeling Clay or mud pastes.

  • Compacted layers, dirt roads

Smashed and heavily compacted roads are best made by mixing soil and medium into a thick paste, for this purpose “Solution” will work best. Applied to the base (styrofoam, board or xps), the paste is smoothed with a spatula. On the sides and through the middle of the road it is worth dusting with a loose layer of gravel and leave it to absorb the glue from underneath.

  • Loose ground, slopes, heaps

For the effect of a loose layer of gravel, stones and boulders, the method mentioned above at the end works best – glue from underneath. Larger uneven ground and mounds of earth we form with “Modeling Clay” or “Universal Mud&Ground paste”. We lubricate the surfaces with “Solution” and pour loose gravel from our fingers. It is advisable to do this for a minimum of 2 layers, that is, after soaking, we reapply Solution and pour the soil in such an amount that its top layer is almost semi-dry at the time of application. Let it soak in a few minutes and leave it to set. For the effect of a very loose, free-flowing appearance of the gravel, it is worth spraying with “Surface Tension Destructor” the whole thing from afar with an atomizer or soaking with a pipette.

We can also, instead of Solution use “Invisible Pigment Fixer”, which, unlike other Fixatives, also does not change the shade and dullness of pigments or sands – however, attention should be paid to the material of the base. Ordinary Styrofoam can melt, especially if it is hot. XPS-polystyrene, wood or plastic do not show this tendency. We do not recommend other fixers from competing companies, because they strongly affect the appearance of the lands and pigments, creating a glaze or even mud effect, which, however, can be used…. The use of Fixer, however, is not advisable if we will transport the diorama. “Mountain Gravel” has a noticeably higher granularity and weight of individual particles than, for example, Magic Earth, and requires stronger bonding.

  • Addition to other products

As mentioned above, “Mountain Gravel” can be a great addition to other products. Since it is natural, it will not bite with any medium, whether acrylic, enamel or alkyd. It can be used as an additive to earth pastes, mud pastes, snow pastes, or paints. It can be used to dust a diorama for later painting. Speaking of which…

  • It can be painted and pigmented.

If you prefer to paint everything yourself despite the realistic appearance of the Gravel, or simply want to change its shade, nothing prevents you from painting it – here we especially recommend our Weathering Paints series, as very matte and grainy paints are great for ground painting. You can also mix the ground with pigments before using the techniques described above, which will enrich its tonal variety. Or simply lighten here and there with an airbrush.
